Find Your Sodom

They all died. Every single one. Their violence, their immorality, their savagery had led them to the brink. They reached the edge of the cliff so quickly that it was a small matter to jump off...even if it was to their own demise. They were the people of Sodom and Gomorrah.

...but they could have been saved you know.

Hours before the fire and brimstone fell on these cities Abraham had a conversation with God about their fate. He pleaded with God to extend His grace if just a handful of righteous people might be found among the teaming masses.

But there weren't 10 godly people to be found in the city.

So the city was destroyed.

The tragedy is that Lot, Abraham's nephew, lived in the city. He was a major player in the town. When the angels of the Lord found him he was sitting at the gate. This was a place of honor for the leaders of the city. Lot had an incredible opportunity to influence this city for God, but instead the fallenness of the city got to him. It seeped into his bones. It changed him.

Heartbreaking.

Lot,his wife and children, his grandchildren; combined they could have outdone superman. They could have saved the city. Their righteousness could have withheld the fire.

Maybe you're a father; teach your children to love God. Maybe you're a wife; don't stop praying for the heart of your lost husband. Maybe you're a student; don't comprise just because it's easy. Your righteousness may just be holding back the fire.

For many years I thought one of Lot's biggest mistakes was going into the city in the first place, but I don't think that's quite right. Ten Godly people would have been enough to hold back judgment, that's an important point to remember.

Ten righteous people in a town of hundreds.

Ten righteous people in a city of thousands.

Ten righteous people in a metropolis of millions.

We can hold back the fire if we only hold the line.

So...where has God called you to be righteous? Where has God called your church to plant His people locally or globally? Have you found your Sodom?

May those of you who read this live righteously. May you hold the line. May you and your churches watch as God sustains you in the dark places and may God save millions!

Community Questions:

Where has God placed you to hold back the fire?

What are some of the challenges those who live in Sodom face? How can we find success in the cities?

Thanks for the reminder that I could be in the town of Sodom. Sodom may easily be the town that I call home. May God grant me and you the courage to stand up and hold the line in the face of God's justified fire. May God also impower me and you with the courage to witness to this doomed sinfull people.

"'Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy'"(Ezekiel 16:49).

If we choose to pursue this journey, let's first begin by searching our own hearts. "For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household; . . ." (I Peter 4:17a).

Let's also be reminded that "if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently" (Galatians 6:1a).

Don't be fooled. If you jump in where you feel you need to be, without the confirmation of the Holy Spirit, it will all be to no avail! Be led of the Spirit, and you will not fulfill the desire of the flesh.

Absolutely right. Let us first give attention to where we are planted and be righteous there before seeking God for a call elsewhere. AND when we do seek a call let's be certain we are led by the Holy Spirit!

Good Thoughts Janet!

2 Peter 2: 7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:
8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)
9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

Coulda, shoulda, woulda... Lot knew when to speak, and when to be silent! Lot was prepared for his moment in time in all that was going on around him. Called a *righteous man, with a righteous soul, he acted not in his own righteousness, but kept his eyes on the goal, unlike his wife!
