I frequently hear, typically from a semi-freaked out person in my age cohort (read older), how instant access to information and the use of technology, primarily for communication, is changing their world too quickly. I find myself sharing that thought on occasion but I wonder how long one has to live in this current environment to get used to this pace. I think by now we should be starting to adjust. We should understand that environmental change is constant and to battle against it is useless. In fact we should be looking to these changes as opportunities to further the cause of Christ in this messed up world.
Following the lead of the marketing folks who focus their time on how to make a legacy product relevant to a new customer base, we need to abandon the ways we share Christ that reflect love of technique and not of outcome. We need to admit that most of our heathen friends and neighbors are not going to read a tract, go to an evangelism event, get up early on Sunday morning to sit quietly in a room for an hour or listen to a video on creationism to prove science is wrong. They are not interested in our old school techniques that push the responsibility of truth telling (as in “I am the way the truth and the life”) on to someone they do not know. They need to see Jesus alive in me and you.
Their days are filled with impersonal routines managed by software. They want the human touch, your touch, the Jesus touch. . This modern age cheapens love and wants us to believe lust is the same thing as love. They need more love, your love, the true love of Jesus. Today’s religion erects barriers that become cages for those who follow the rules. They are desperately ready for relationships, a relationship with you, a relationship with Jesus. The message cannot change but the medium must. Jesus loves change it keeps us looking to him as the constant.
