Hard Places bring new opportunities

Our team has been constructing hangers for over twenty years. When church planting efforts begin, a location is targeted. Preliminary evangelism efforts are made through door to door initiatives or chatting with people in the market. If there is a response, a request is made for property. The first structure to be built is a pastor’s house, with a large porch that can host Sunday meetings. The next structure is what has come to be known as a hanger. It has metal poles that hold up a metal roof. As the church grows, they can fill in those walls with bricks. When the church outgrows the hanger, a large church structure is built and the hanger is used for Sunday School classes.

But due to recent insecurity and the rapid growth of our city, the hanger has come to serve in other ways. Recently, we built one on an empty piece of property that was given for the use of a ministry to displaced children and children at risk. The women leading this ministry, took that hanger and put up plywood walls and covered those walls with tarp. They strung an extension cord across the yard so that there would be light and fans. Tables and chairs were brought in and now kids at risk have a learning center where they can come, participate in workshops, learn how to be safe in a big city, and receive advice and counseling from Christians.

We have found that because our country has become a hard place, we have to look for unique opportunities. We want to use the materials and skills we have to maybe do our work a bit differently but still maintain a Gospel presence. Your giving to the Great Commission Fund, allows us to serve in this hard place and make a difference for those who are in need.
