He went to school. This was somewhat unheard of for a deaf child. He passed his exams and moved through the grades to graduate from the sixth grade. It was a Christian school and he began attending a church, even though he could not hear anything that was said. He made the decision to accept Christ as his Savior through the witness of a teacher at the deaf school, but it didn’t change a whole lot for him. He was orphaned and not able to find work. He spent his days begging. The deaf school put him into different apprenticeships, but he wasn’t interested. In exasperation, the deaf school asked us if we would sponsor him at our sewing school. We were hesitant and the first few months were difficult. He hardly showed up at the sewing school and often pretended to be sick, still preferring to beg to get by. One day, the director of the program received a large order for face masks. He quickly offered this young man a cut of the profit if he could quickly get the order fulfilled. It was the spark that grew into a flame. It was something he knew he could do and he would motivate others at the center to help him. From that moment on, this young man was at work, often the first to arrive and the last to leave. He studied for a professional sewing exam and passed and now himself is teaching others. Recently, he was chosen to speak at an awards ceremony and he clearly gave the glory to Christ, saying that believers didn’t give up on him and prayed for him. A destiny changed by the Lord Jesus, who called us to be present and to invest in the life of this young man.
