Bible Translation

The Christian and Missionary Alliance has been involved with four Bible translations in Burkina Faso. It has been a part of our DNA, to put the Holy Scriptures into the local languages of the great peoples of Burkina Faso. Those missionaries who were involved in these projects can speak to the many difficulties that were encountered, as well as to how often the Lord intervened so that the translation could progress. Today, four complete Bibles are done.

But now the real work begins. That is, not only assuring the fine balance between selling the Bibles to give them value or subsidizing them so the price is affordable, but also figuring out how to encourage literacy so that the Bibles are actually read.

There is yet another challenge with Bible translations, like ours, that target a semi-literate or non-literate people group. How to make the Word of God available to those who cannot read and probably will never learn to read? We are thankful for our four Alliance Christian radios that broadcast in many different languages and uses the scriptures that have been translated. We encourage all Bible translators to come in to the radio studio and record some scripture even when only portions of the Bible have been translated.

Right now, Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ) volunteers are in our radio studio, using the Bobo-Mandarè Bible translated by Nancy Pierce and her team, for use in the Jesus Film. We are thrilled that this language was chosen for the project, that the Bible labored over many years ago by one of our Alliance missionaries, is being used, and that our pastors and lay-leaders are lending their voices for the soundtrack. The Jesus film continues to be a wonderful means of sharing the Gospel. We are thankful to have our mission be a part of this project by not only providing the translation, but also the voices and recording studio. Our desire is to continue to find creative means of spreading the Gospel widely in the languages of all the peoples in Burkina Faso.
