Most people, in the city where we serve, live in a shared courtyard. That means a very small space is shared by sometimes ten families. It means one common outhouse, one common cooking space, and very cramped living conditions. It is a source of conflicts, sharp words, and much unkindness. One of our widows, Mrs. Sana, was living in such a situation. One of the women in that courtyard decided to make life miserable for Mrs. Sana and her children. She would yell and curse and even take some of Mrs. Sana's things. But Mrs. Sana met each difficulty with patience and kindness. Things became so bad that finally, to avoid being a source of conflict, Mrs. Sana decided to move to another courtyard. Several years went by. One day, Mrs. Sana was surprised to find this same woman moving into the courtyard where she was living. When Mrs. Sana went to greet her, the woman said, "I want to live near you. You are the only person that has ever shown me kindness. I know it is because of the God that you are serving." Mrs. Sana was able to share the Gospel with this woman and lead her to Christ. This new believer's testimony is one of forgiveness and kindness that opened the door for her to find Christ. She recently said to me, "I did not like being mean and now that I have Christ I am so happy." Forgiveness and kindness go hand in hand and in this case brought a difficult neighbor to be truly forgiven and become a best friend forever.
