I have been doing a nightly study of Isaiah.......using Chuck Missler's Youtube videos.  I just want to say that it has added much depth to my understanding of Jesus, of God's people, and God's Character.

I have an extensive library that I have accumulated of Christian books......you know......the old classics....which I love and will always love.  But I found that I would always reach for one of those before I would reach for my Bible.

I am certainly not knocking Christian books and teaching tapes etc etc.....in fact......it is a recording of Chuck Missler that is helping me to unravel the mysteries (to me) of Isaiah the Prophet. I started trying to read Isaiah by myself and I was totally lost before I got past Chapter One.

Do any of my sisters and brothers on this forum have any Bible Study teacher's or helps that you would suggest????  I am determined to develop a love for God's Word.

If all I can love in this world are my hobbies and my pasttimes...........then I foresee a meaningless existence. I WANT to WANT TO LOVE GOD'S WORD!!!!!!!  I am not exactly there yet,.......but that is my daily prayer.    Thanks for reading. kevin

Kevin, I don`t have a problem with commentaries, or even most Christian books, as long as I use them correctly...for me.  By this, I mean that the Bible is, and always will be, the standard and ultimate Word of God.  The books and commentaries are used just to let me see what some others thought about the same scripture I am reading. Maybe I agree with their conclusions or maybe I don`t.  I know that Chuck Missler always starts his studies with asking people not to believe anything he says, but go to the Bible and look it up! As I see it(so you can discount what comes after this), some people get into taking what the books say as the truth and then not taking the Bible at its word.  Some Christian books start well, but gradually start to stray into grey areas, and then move off into things that are simply untrue.  The Bible "tells it like it is" but some(not many) Christian authors tell things "like they want them to be". Don`t get me wrong, I love commentaries and Christian books, but I only use them to see what others THINK about scripture I am reading, I do not use them to speak to me in the same way Holy Spirit speaks through Holy scripture.

Isaiah is a wonderful study Kevin, it tells me about Jesus many, many years before His birth.  One wonders why the Jewish leadership, who knew the book of Isaiah very well, totally missed their Messiah and refused to even consider Jesus as Him.  Once in a while, areas of it are confusing to some, such as the passage the Ethiopian was reading when Phillip showed up to interpret for him. Reading Isaiah with the Holy Spirit in the chair with you is time very well spent(in my opinion). As you know, I use Missler`s commentaries and books regularly and so far have found him to be right on the mark, but I still listen to his admonition and look to the Bible as final truth.

May God bless you for seeking and studying His word.  He will, because He said he would.

Your bother,

Charlie

Primarily to help or gain insight into different passages etc. ,I have a six volume set of Matthew Henrys commentary. i should mention, I purchased this set at a second hand store for $20.00. Often his insight based on holy living and a heart that was completely sold out to the Lord has helped my desire and helped my understanding.

Hi Kevin. In response to the desire of your heart I am hearing from you, I like this:

“O God, I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more. I am painfully conscious of my need for further grace. I am ashamed of my lack of desire. O God, the Triune God, I want to want Thee; I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made more thirsty still. Show me Thy glory, I pray Thee, so that I may know Thee indeed. Begin in mercy a new work of love within me. Say to my soul, ‘Rise up my love, my fair one, and come away.’ Then give me grace to rise and follow Thee up from this misty lowland where I have wandered so long.”

I too have learned from Chuck Missler the difference between what bible teachers views of scripture are and what the bible actually says. Another teacher I use often is Joe Focht http://www.ccphilly....-bible-studies/ because he teaches line by line, the whole bible. I enjoy commentaries and devotionals but line by line is my favorite.
