Recently, our Sunday school class, seems to drift into discussions of how the USA, has gotten away from God(usually fueled by our President, saying we are on our "high horse", etc.,-I really don't want to go there, though), and how we need to "take a stand"

The description of what that looks like varies: Petition drives, voting "Godly people into Congress", and using Jesus' example of turning over chairs, and driving people out with a whip(yes, really), etc.

I don't want to knock them, because I once thought the same way. My view today is the only 'temple' I can drive any evil, falsehood out of, is my own heart, and the OT "rid the evil from among you" is how I manage my own life, not necessarily a person, place or thing. As far as who I vote for, I now go by the maxim of "the best of men, are men, at best" and will sooner, or later let us down.

Any thoughts? Am I way off?

You're not way off or off at all. I can understand personally what you relate.

I think it's best to "stick to the text"; the scriptures are where we hear the truth and faith comes by hearing it....ever increasing faith...faith to faith.

We have a similar thing going on in our bible study. I don't want to knock anyone at all. It gets into new world order, etc. too frequently. While these world issues and current events may be true, I don't know if that's why we ought to meet as the body of Christ. Ought we not be there to glorify Him and grow in faith through study of scriptures. We need to be real in community too.

My husband is going to say something this weekend when we meet.

I don't remember anywhere in scripture where Jesus complains about the Roman Empire or anything like that. Nor did the disciples. And, yes, even the best of leaders will ultimately disappoint. I remember Sarah Palin not meeting all the expectations of a Christian that we all kind of thought would happen.

Good post and probably common to many groups. Thanks for posting.

I was on a blog a while back, where a similar conversation was taking place. I asked who did Jesus support for Cesar. Of course, the response was "well, they didn't get to vote". Right. So how did Jesus and the disciples make such a difference? Probably by following Micah 6:8 Loving mercy, doing justice, and walking humbly with God. Christ rebuked Peter for attempting to kill a Roman soldier.

Maybe this is our(the Church in the USA's) 'exile', and we're called, like it says in Jeremiah 29:7 to " seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to The Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper"

I do not believe our deliverance will come out of Washington DC, and the longer we look there the worse it will get.
