As believers, with the assumption we are saved, can we get more righteous?  Or, put another way, can we add to our righteousness?  If so, by what means.  Please keep it scriptural, if you say "yes"!

Perhaps the fruit of righteousness may be increased....

(Heb 12:11 KJV)
Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

(Jas 3:18 KJV)
And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Great reply Ginger. Of course, there is rhetoric in my original post.  And, I just love someone else posting truth from the Word as you did here. Thank you. Can we say to each other in encouragement or exhortation, "We need to practice, get or be more righteous"? Christ is our righteousness.  Nothing else.  So, no believer can be more righteous than another.  Some may trust more, etc.  Any "additional" righteousness is "self-righteousness" or at least lack of humility.

Thanks!
Blessings

Candice’s post led to more thinking and more writing and more praying and more hoping too….

I done been through the bawling over my self-righteousness being as 'filthy rags' at least 50 years ago to begin to learn I was an unrighteous mess; and now ... all I can do is thank Jesus for His righteousness and grace and tender mercies. So many Christians seem to be bearing the fruits of righteousness and as for myself it seems I don't see the results of fruit. Have been told what I don't do and tend to give up on putting any confidence in achieving more than I've been achieving unless the Lord gives me His energies coz mine are spent. Went beyond procrastination long ago... read your post on you keep getting an Exhortation.... maybe I'm just 'dense' but it sounds like an affirmation to me and I just 'don't get it'... If I could do what I ought to do when I ought to do it, I would and it'd be a 'dun deal'... Don’t have anything to do with making excuses. It is something deeper than procrastination... I've even asked if I have something that I'm rebelling against.... had to finally just trust that when I asked the Lord to do an extreme make over on me and things outwardly actions or habits regarding lacking accomplishments have exacerbated and accepting the responsibility for choices and consequences is about as productive as covering a hole that's been dug with a bit of a tarp and walking around it. LOL need a backhoe to fill in the hole and my wee shovel is like a child's spade. So if the analogy is 'dumb', O Well... I need to practice the behaviors that come from being righteousness or having God’s righteousness as you've said in your post... and then have a credible claim to a harvest of a different fruit due to planting it (There is a Scripture about the planting of the LORD too so best pray and read some more) and the LORD is nurturing it (us) ... Tasks that ought to be done when they ought to be done can send some folks down a dreary hopeless road... long ago some person would say ya ought to or you need a routine.... whatever.... like my brain is frozen or fried or whatever would cause it to be unable to come up with a thought... forgive me for being worse than factious... God KNOWS and some folks honestly cannot change for whatever reason or whatever label may be attached... I could cuss but that would be unseemly... had to repent of thoughts anyway ... I'm posting about my unrighteousness and having filthy rags and self-willed efforts that fail and then here comes thoughts of the rich man and the beggar... or the man who was set on tearing down barns and building bigger ones... All I can say is they didn't give me a disability check for procrastination.... Now what do I do to be an overcomer and more than a conqueror? What is it that God is wanting me to learn about self-willed efforts that seem to lead to little or nothing? Do I lack being responsible? Seems I could make a choice and just determine to do what 'ought to be done when it ought to be done' but what happens is my efforts fail. It is only God's grace and tender mercies and learning to, learn to, learn to do wee things from being loved instead of ought is what came only yesterday. Mary put oil on Jesus and some thought it was a terrible waste... Jesus had called her brother from a tomb when the stench would be really bad... she (Mary had a faith that faltered a bit and her sister Martha was up to par for the moment instead.... so I've heard someone tell... So now what? Smiling because Jesus is doing something in His extreme make over in my heart and I can reckon in time the homemaker will resurrect or else it won't matter or be important... Praise God for being able to come to the computer and read, listen or write. What the LORD is doing is working in me to will and to do of His good pleasure in spite of all my falters and stumbles ... So I readily admit I'm upset if I don't focus on seeing what the Lord is working on in spite of outward appearance, tasks accomplishments in the house...Even in personal care. Does the LORD care? He surely does and meets all my need. I sure though He would care more about things being clean and neat and no clutter... remember that I asked for a pure heart so reckon being in the Bible on the computer and having just enough energy to do what truly has to be done to sustain is a rude awakening and methinks God KNOWS so reckon I can have some righteous methinks if I have the mind of Christ on this that or the other instead of tradition and opinion.... O WOW, Praise the Lord, Hallelujah, Whoopee... Seek ye first the kingdom of God and HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS and all these things shall be added unto you.... what things? The things I've lamented about until I'm plumb embarrassed... Well, all I can say is that Christ is my righteousness because I don't have anything but filthy rags when it comes to having any other righteousness.... self-righteousness is a word that just don't make sense to me.... there ain't no righteousness. It’s like self (minus) righteousness, just self or elf with an s in front of it... So maybe me failing to achieve might have something to do with pruning and more pruning and some more pruning 'Until'. Many years ago a man in a home type church said that God was going to prune me to a nub. l reckon much is due to long-term consequences because of sin and choices. God forgives and some consequences continue to remain. God KNOWS what He has taken me from and where He is taking me to… He doesn’t remember my sins He put them as far as the east is from the west. He did give me free will to choose Him and to want to know His will and do His will. He continues to hold me and not throw me on the dunghill. Honestly don't know beyond speculating about many things; but I’m surely grateful for the love of the Lord to me in spite of all of my defects, errors, and failures. Praise Him for His goodness to me in spite of…. Am I procrastinating? I make a choice to come to the computer instead of doing homemaking tasks. Sometimes it takes an hour to do what some think I ought to be able to do in minutes seems ludicrous. Whenever there has been or remains deep-seated emotional stuff some folks wind up not functioning mentally as another, for whatever reasons… some people achieve in spite of and some don’t. What makes the difference? What does God allow? Everything in me and about me has been and is “Father filtered”. My Abba Father knows each character defect, each mental and/or physical state and the level of ability that is real; and all things do work together for good for me because I do love God to the best of my wee ability. Only God knows if I love Him or not. If I’m obeying Him or just shining myself on and I do pray to be sincere in loving God. I know what I was like to be suicidal many years ago. God spared my life. Mostly all I ask for is to be able to love the LORD with all of my heart, soul, strength, and mind. Other persons’ love is what it is by God’s grace and tender mercies too. So we all whom are born again come to the LORD and cry out; or praise; or give thanks; and reckon only God KNOWS so what good does any of our supposing do? We are the righteousness of God in Christ, what more could we want? Only to know and do HIS will by the strength HE gives us to do all that is HIS will.

WHAT DOES GOD SEE WHEN HE LOOKS AT YOU?

How you answer this reveals what you really believe in your heart about God.

What you believe is powerful. Grace is the antidote for a poisoned mind. Grace is the truth that Jesus came to give us. Grace and truth are one in the same thing. It is the truth of grace and not of the law that brings you true freedom. Religion creates bondage. When Jesus talks about grace, He is talking about himself. Grace is a person. We can't process His grace logically in our minds, it needs to be experienced in the heart.

John 14:6. The way, the truth, and the life. (Jesus). Religion is fault finding, legalistic, critical of others, making loud claims and pointing out the bad. (Pharisees). (And when they stood in the very presence of God, they did not recognize Him because they were "self" occupied. They condemn and judge. This is why people do not hear Him. The wrong belief traps in a cycle of guilt, fear, defeat, addiction, sickness, and trusting everyone else to help them other than God Himself. Right believing will set us free.

Praying for good is grace. Anything opposite is condemning. We get what we do not deserve. (Psalms 103:10. ) this was already taken care of at the cross. God cannot be judging and punishing for transgressions if He removed them. We punish ourselves by wrong thinking. The works of Jesus were to pursue the shunned. And He's still doing this today. Religion teaches us to fear God. Jesus defines fear as worship.( See Deut. 6:13 and Matt. 4:10. )

The old covenant law was all about your love for God. The new covenant of (grace) is all about God's love for you. Under grace God doesn't want you to focus on your thoughts of how much you can love Him. His love is based on who He is not based on what we do.

The people who qualify for His justification are the ones who have failed, fall short, made mistakes, sinned. The religious (godly) do not qualify because they worship a Different God. He came to redeem the imperfect, and ungodly. He doesn't make the guilty feel more guilty, ashamed feel more ashamed, He already knew how they felt and had compassion. Religion concentrates on the sinner and the sin. Jesus concentrates on the believer being washed clean and restored. Religion gives people what they think they deserve. Jesus gives what we don't. Those who have been forgiven much, love much, those who have been forgiven little, love little. The broken and humbled experience His love for themselves , and it's by that love that they are transformed. Religion will never transform people from the inside out. Self efforts of overcoming failings and mistakes only lead to more bondage. Grace is a gift, not earned. And receive it by knowing Gods truth, and forgetting all the old knowledge which is based on the law do the old covenant. When we receive grace, our words will only speak life. If they don't, than it's time to put off the old man (religion) and put on the new (Jesus) and start receiving all promises and blessings. (Wherever your faith is, you will receive no more than what you believe)

When God sees you, He sees Jesus. His thoughts toward us are loving kindness, forgiveness, blessings & favor. John 3:15 "that whoever believes in Him shall never perish." It doesn't say obeys Him perfectly, never fails again, and it certainly does not say whoever keeps all his commandments. It simply says whoever believes in Him. In Numbers 23:21 God did not say there was no sin or iniquity in His people, He said He didn't see it. He is not saying there is no sin in us, He is saying " I don't see it" He already saw our sins punished into nonexistence. Because of the atonement and payment by Jesus, He sees us as righteous, forgiven, healed, favored, blessed, accepted, and beloved sons and daughters because of the cross for Jesus. Do you see yourself that way?

THE KEY TO FAITH IS FOUND IN LOOKING TO THE SOURCE OF FAITH....JESUS

Fix your eyes on Him and His finished work. The more you receive His love and grace, and see you the way He sees you, the more you will arise from every area of defeat . When we have negative attitudes about ourselves and others, we have wrong beliefs about God. If you believe that God is hard on you for any failures, you will be hard on others around you, and end up being hard on yourself. The root cause of habits, fears, addictions, and sickness can be traced back to condemnation. God is not in the business of condemning. He is in the business of forgiving. He understands every temptation and every trial. He's not waiting for you to live up to a set of do's and don'ts before He forgives and loves you.

People believe wrong when they think that their righteousness is dependent upon how they will perform that day. This leads to an identity crisis. Righteousness is not a result of right doing, it is only a result in right believing. There are so many teachings on right doing, right doing, and more right doing. And people put their hope in righteousness they think they have to produce. Sin is not the issue. The issue is not understanding the grace of Jesus. When you are under grace, sin has no dominion over your life. It cannot take root when you are established in God's forgiveness. Receiving His forgiveness puts you in victory, whereas those who receive condemnation for every wrong thought in their mind enter into a never ending cycle of defeat. Christian religion will keep people on a treadmill based on efforts and acceptance.

Under the law ( Old Testament) right living is done out of religious obligation. Under grace (Jesus) New Testament, everything we do is of inward motivation from a love relationship. But His love needs to work in us first. When we experience His love, we just love, when we experience His forgiveness, we just forgive, automatically without trying. This is being renewed in your mind. The laws God writes on our Hearts are nit the Ten Commandments. " thou shall not commit murder" but it cannot put love and forgiveness in your heart for someone who has wronged you. He who is forgiven much, loves much and he who is loved most, loves best. Do you want to know the will of God, then look at Jesus. He is the living expression of what's on God's mind and heart, and this is how he looks at every believer.
