Hello everyone,

Bendiciones!

I the Missions Coordinator for ACyM of Nutley (Spanish Eastern District) and I was hoping to get some information for a presentation we want to do at our church.

What I am looking for is some statistics on what donations over here in the States can accomplish overseas. The children's faith promise cards, for example, have a "What could you buy with a dollar?" illustration. It says that 25 cents a month will help pay for Sunday school supplies. $1 a month will help buy bibles for children. $5 a month will help pay for bibles to be translated.

I am looking for more statistics like these in order to compare them with what we spend the same amount on over here on a daily basis. Something like:

Here a coffee is $2.00. For a missionary, $2.00 a day/week/etc pays for ______
Here a pack of gum is $1,15. For a missionary, a $1.15 pays for_______

I hope I have explained my intentions correctly. If you have any information, I would appreciate it.

Dios les Bendiga!
Jesus B.

Hi Jesus,

I randomly just saw your post on the sidebar on one of the C&MA pages, so I thought I'd see if I can help! Although it looks like you posted this quite awhile ago. I'm an international worker serving in Kosovo, which is in the Balkans (Southeastern Europe). First, thanks for trying to get creative with promoting the Great Commission Fund with your church and children! That's awesome!! Thanks for catching the visions!

The answers to your questions will obviously vary greatly by country/region. Do you have any specific partnerships/connections with particular international workers or fields overseas? If you can present this to the kids (or church) using the ministry of someone they already know, it would probably be more powerful, at least in my opinion. That way they could also share about specific ministries they are doing. For example, one worker might be a part of helping provide school supplies to kids who can't afford them (which might connect really well with other kids), but not all international workers do that. Does that make sense?

In case you don't have a specific worker or overseas field that you're already connected with, I'll try to give you some general ideas about prices of things in my area of the world. These prices could be used to talk about helping the international worker buy food, take care of their households, etc.

2 liter of Coca Cola - $1.53
1 gallon of milk - $4.78
Dozen eggs - $1.43
Laundry soap 100oz - $8.25
5 lbs of flour - $1.77
1 gallon of gas - $6.20
1 lb bananas - $0.84
1 lb potatoes - $0.38
1 lb oranges - $0.57
Fast food hamburger (size of a dollar menu hamburger, but not McD's!) - $0.66
Latte - $1.33
Macchiatto - $0.66
Meal out at a "casual dining restaurant" - $6.63

As far as ministry-type things, here are a few ideas (smaller-type things/events) that we have helped support in the past:
Send a child/youth to a week of Christian summer camp - $53
Provide drinks/snacks for a church fellowship time - $10
Christmas Tea outreach to women - $67
Provide books for a future ministry leader for one course of his ministry leadership course - $10
Provide a Bible for someone who comes to Christ - $13
Provide a children's Bible for someone who comes to Christ - $7
Snacks during weekly children's program - $6
Put on a free summer children's camp (outreach) - $130
Host neighbors in your home for coffee/tea - $3-5
Host neighbors in your home for a meal - $15-20
Provide wood for a family who can't afford to heat their home in the winter - $300

I hope that helps you or anyone else out there who reads this and wants to use the info! Please let me know if you have any additional specific questions - I'll see if I can help. :)

Blessings!

Hi Connie,

Thanks so much!! This is exactly what I was looking for. We are currently in the process of praying and seeking for a partnership with an overseas international worker ministry. Your suggestion is an excellent one and we also feel that having a direct connection to an international worker ministry will motivate us more since it will feel like we are more involved, invested as it were. Again, thank you so much!
