I think we are constantly accosted by external and internal damages. For instance, we read how illnesses ravage bodies--even something as inocuous as a tomato can wreak havoc for one who is predisposed to ulcers. We also read how tornadoes and hurricanes have destroyed entire communities.
How can we bear such things? How can we bear seeing such suffering?
Well, we may not be able to bear it if we think this is all there is. However, the author of Hebrews writes:
"For here we do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking the city which is to come" (13:14).
And yet, Jesus did not want the Father to remove us from this world, for we are to carry on the work of Jesus (see John 17:15). Certainly, the Lord knew that we would suffer as He suffered, and He felt that reaching the lost was worth it.
Thankfully, Jesus does not leave us alone and said, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him" (John 14:23). Not only did the Trinity promise to live with us, our Lord sent the Holy Spirit to believers as tongues of fire and a violent rushing wind (Acts 2:2-3). Thus, we have the LORD's presence within and without, and His abiding is not without great power!
Hence, as we are tempted to despair, it is good to remember that the power and peace of God is great! Indeed, we are the bearers of the light and love of Jesus, and in the midst of trials, God can use us to bring an eternal hope.
