One of the tenants in our apartment complex is dangerously unstable (his name is Nate). He has destroyed people's property and threatened a tenant with physical harm. We have no proof (just what the other tenant told us), so we can't call police. This tenant told us that when he planted a rosebush, Nate became enraged and pulled it out by roots, all the while screaming, "I hate rosebushes!" When the tenant complained, Nate threatened him with a pipe.

Please pray for protection and wisdom. My 83-year-old mother-in-law will be moving into this complex later this month, and we don't want her living near someone who is so destructive. Pray that God will restrain Nate from harming anyone or damaging any more property. Also, pray for his salvation and healing.

Based on your description, this definitely sounds symptomatic of a mental illness.  If you have reason to suspect something you might try calling up the police and/or a local nonprofit (such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness) and asking what can be done.  Nate may need your help and it certainly isn't worth waiting until someone is hurt.

Thanks for your advice, Matt! My husband suspected mental illness as well. He was reluctant to call police because he has been trying to build a friendship with Nate in hopes of leading him to Jesus. Seeking out a nonprofit for advice is a great idea.

I have dealt with adult behavior like this from people before. I have an older brother ( not blood related to me ) who acts very identical to Nate. You are right, the police won’t do anything without proof of a crime being or have been committed. My best suggestions to you and others is first to always stay clear and safe from Nate. Secondly, when possible, use recording devices to document his behavior and actions. Not only for criminal charges, but for mental evaluation suggestion. Lastly, continue to pray. There is a cloudy line between mentally ill and evil behavior. So hard to know which is which. Pray and stay safe.

I'll pray for Nate to hear God's voice through your husband's witness. May our Lord keep you all safe from any harm.

Thanks for praying, everyone! Things really heated up last night. Several irate parents in the complex confronted Nate on the lawn outside and told him to stay away from their children (the confrontation took place right outside our living room window). I don't know the details of what went on with the kids, but two of the men tried to punch Nate (he didn't fight back; I think the Lord may have restrained him, because he says he used to be a boxer). The conflict blew over fairly quickly when Nate went inside. Obviously he's made a lot of tenants very, very angry (it is also apparent that he has been deliberately antagonistic). We are praying that the Lord will either bring him to repentance or remove him from the complex. He clearly needs professional help and may even need to be institutionalized.

Now we have this treasure in clay jars, so that this extraordinary power may be from God and not from us.

We are pressured in every way but not crushed; we are perplexed but not in despair;

we are persecuted but not abandoned; we are struck down but not destroyed.
