This past week our hospital ministry team in Burkina Faso visited a potential ministry site. We had been asked to expand our ministry to include a newly opened Christian hospital on the outskirts of our city. For several months we have been pressured to pick a time slot for our ministry, but we preferred to visit the site first and pray as we toured the facility and ask the Lord Jesus to clearly show us how He would see this ministry progressing.
Several positive aspects of this visit were the following:
1. From the start we wanted to be followers of Christ and allow Him to fully direct this ministry. This was evident to members of our team as well as the personnel of the hospital when we took the time to visit and pray and seek the Lord's direction before the work actually began.
2. It has allowed team members to have ownership of the ministry. As we met to pray and discuss, each was given an opportunity to say how they felt the Lord would want the work to progress and what their part would be.
3. It has allowed us to set realistic goals and understand some of the challenges ahead of us before launching into the ministry. We could talk about additional training or resources that might be necessary to do the things we felt God was calling us to do.
These are the same advantages that come with field visits or ministry visits for those wanting to commit to a people group or a missionary, even if they themselves will not be part of the hands-on ministry.
If you are wondering how God could use you in sharing the Good News of Christ, consider a visit to a ministry setting, such as a local hospital or prison. Consider going to an area where the Gospel has not been heard or understood and catch a vision for partnering with believers who are on the ground in some of these areas. If you have had a mission’s experience, go back through your journals and ask the Lord to renew that vision again and to show you how you can be involved.
