Recently, I again stopped consuming alcohol – yet, not out of direct conviction from or devotion to God. Rather, I took a position at a Christian college with a “holiness” background. This college required me to promise to abstain from alcohol. This time I was not shocked, but still disappointed, when I was informed that not all faculty follow through with this promise.

Based on these experiences, I am skeptical of fellow Christians who claim that there is no place for alcohol or that abstinence is the "higher" road. Further, an honest reading of the New Testament should convince one that Jesus and Paul likely consumed small amounts of alcohol.

It is my experience that the sin of deception and hypocrisy - so often associated with a theology of abstinence - is missing in these discussions.

D-O,

I think you've touched on one of the larger issues around this discussion. In my experience, which includes attendance at a couple of Christian institutions of higher learning and employment at a couple of Christian ministries, I too have seen the same dynamics you've described. We were all pledged to abstain completely. I know any institution has a right to make it's rules, but many of these institutions are making rules for behavior that are not scriptural. So unfortunately, students, employees, etc. begin to adopt a don't ask, don't tell policy and do not honor the pledge. Further, some of these institutions are doggedly holding onto holiness "traditions" that were never scriptural, but they won't let them go. I had one instructor years ago say we know some of our rules are not scriptural, but they are our rules-abide by them if you want to stay here. So the institutions themselves are holding standards they know are not scriptural, in some cases.

As for people who do not honor the pledges, I think that is a separate question. Is it a question of integrity, honesty or simply using one's own judgment on these private matters? I guess the simple point I am making is that an un-biblical standard of behavior imposed on an employee or student, in itself, has a tendency to contribute to hypocrisy or avoidance of the pledge. Again though, not saying it's okay to avoid the pledge, but there is also some level of hypocrisy or blindness at Christian institutions that hold tradition over the scripture. In your case, I would not lose my good job over a beer, but it's sad that it could could come down to that in some places.

To quote a brother above but to a different end than he probably intended:

Colossians 2:20  If then you have died with Christ to material ways of looking at things and have escaped from the world’s crude and elemental notions and teachings of externalism, why do you live as if you still belong to the world? [Why do you submit to rules and regulations?—such as]

21  Do not handle [this], Do not taste [that], Do not even touch [them],

22  Referring to things all of which perish with being used. To do this is to follow human precepts and doctrines.[Isa. 29:13.]

23  Such [practices] have indeed the outward appearance [that popularly passes] for wisdom, in promoting self-imposed rigor of devotion and delight in self-humiliation and severity of discipline of the body, but they are of no value in checking the indulgence of the flesh (the lower nature). [Instead, they do not honor God but serve only to indulge the flesh.]

Please share your rationale.

Alcohol kills brain cells, and I don't know anyone who can afford to lose any. It impairs your thoughts, reactions and reflexes. Alcohol is a drug, and like other drugs it can open doors to some pretty evil things.

I wonder, if statistics were available, how many are dying, being destroyed, killed by "legal" drugs prescribed by the modern medical association? Does it make it morally correct to distribute them because they have warnings of the destructive side effects on the bottles?

Or, is it morally correct for any Christian to take any drug into their bodies that will do everything or worse than that whjich alcohol will do?

ABC New supposedly knows that alcohol "raises the risk of developing more than 200 diseases"???? ...really???? Alcohol no longer kills germs, but develops diseases??? Is the secular news now a reliable authority?

I am sorry but I could not find, via a google search, this information, which you have quoted, to see the context it was given in. I did find the news media doing what they do best though, laying the blame for cancer, heart disease, etc on anything but the truth; in this case, laying the blame on alcohol.

Anything in excess is harmful! Even water, in excess can kill you! The medical field believes that alcohol kills disease??? Do you know what is used as a carrier for many liquid medications? Is it possible that it is alcohol?? Most tinctures are made with alcohol!

Alcohol kills?? Drugs kill?? Guns kill?? Knives kill?? Baseball bats kill?? Water kills?? Cars and trucks kill??? Showers kill??? Really??? Does the human brain, free will, and the choices that people make not have anything to do with the killing?? Shall we start banning everything that has potential to kill?? Yes, if you listen to the world of fear mongers, the world media, and the world organizations with their studies.

Where does the Bible stand as an authority?? For the world it is meaningless literature! What about believers??  What should be the most reliable authority?

My Bible says or infers in many places that people are dying not because of disease, but because of sin and a lack of knowledge, because the shepherds are not doing their job and proclaiming the Truth. People that follow the world and the world's way are lost in darkness, dying now and eternally.

Sorry Phil, I just have a major problem with the deception of the world media. I will not leave you hanging with no other source of information though. The Bible is sometimes hard to understand, even confusing to those that do not have the Holy Spirit to teach them, but there are those that are proclaiming Truth, if you look hard enough.

There are sitll those that believe in a Creator and the ways of a Creator God; who are trying to spread the truth about life in this physical world and how God has shown us how to live; how to live in health. It does not come about by campaigns against imagined evils or blaming anything but our selves.

It is not the inanimate things of this world that are inherently evil, it is the people and how they use what is in their hands. It is the hearts and minds of humanity that is either good or evil; made so by the influences that they choose toi sit under and feed on. The things that they choose to believe to be truth, meditate on, and do or act on. Most items and foods can be used either to bring life or to bring death. The Bible teaches us to be wise, to have moderation in all things. There is harm in extremes! The power of the tools in our hands is determined by the heart and mind of the user; it can cause harm or healing.

I have recently been lead to an individual that is using all that God has given them to bring understanding, truth, and life to anyone willing to hear, believe and act on it; this is what the Word of God teaches us; do what you know is right to do. Paul said that whoever you lend your members to, to obey, that is who's servant you are; either to good or evil. Jesus said, at the end of His sermon on the mount, it is the wise man that both hears and does, the fool just hears!!

Barbara O'Neill, also from Australia, as your news blurp was, shares what I believe to be truth rather than error. I believe that you would receive far more health by listening to her 13 training sessions, than you would ever receive by listening to even years of the world's information and news.

Her first session will give you some truth about disease, rather than a worldly fear of disease.

Hope you will find her informative and encouraging, a real Christian, with a heart to heal!!

TKulp,  I'm watching these videos and I love this gal.  Thanks for sharing.  I do the high intensity interval and follow and practice much of what she teaches.  Thankfully, a naturopathic approach to life has considerably helped my Lupus.  Vitamin D alone helped tremendously.
