What is C&MA's position on alcohol consumption?

The following statement has been adopted by the Board of Directors with specific reference to abstinence from addictive practices for those "official workers" within The Alliance. The C&MA has no policy regarding alcohol usage by members beyond the clear teaching of the Bible which says “Do not get drunk…” This is a matter for the local church to make its own policy.

The Christian and Missionary Alliance affirms the scriptural warnings regarding the misuse of alcohol, and the importance of living above reproach at all times. We also affirm that in a society plagued by substance abuse and addictive behaviors, the highest standard of conduct includes abstaining from the use of alcohol and other addictive practices. In all decisions, one needs to be sensitive not to cause anyone to stumble. Additionally, 1 Corinthians 10:31 needs to be upheld: So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

I hope that helps you with your question.

This quote was originally presented in 2011 and was from a document provided from Church Ministries. The official statement for those considering licensing and ordination in Church Ministries is contained within the "Licensing, Ordination, & Consecration Council Handbook" and is available for licensed C&MA workers. Please contact your local Alliance District for further clarification.

Hello Marvin,

Is there a digital copy of that Handbook you mention. I tried looking for it but can only find the CMA manual, unless I'm not looking in the right place.

"abstaining from the use of alcohol" - A good standard... for members & all.

A.B. Simpson had this to say of the very drink of hell - accursed alcohol:

"In ancient times the fruit of the vine was used without fermentation. It is the mixture with leaven and corruption which has made it such a curse. The devil does not use evil things to harm the world, but good ones. He has taken the vine and cursed the world with it... and trying to turn every good thing to some evil use, that he may dishonor God and curse man. As he has turned the beautiful vine into accursed alcohol ... has changed the fruit of the vine into the very wine of hell."

(A.B. Simpson, Natural Emblems of Spiritual Life)

From the start C&MA has been aggressively evangelising drunkards - and this is seen in the Life of A.B. Simpson, p. 96:

"It still continues to be the most aggressive center of evangelism in New York City. The poor are always welcome, and not infrequently drunkards stagger in through the corridor and go out saved by the grace of God."
