Will the Church End Abortion?

For the last four years, I have been sharing this message in churches: abortion is first of all a spiritual issue. Satan is the architect of abortion (see John 8:44) and abortion is a satanic enterprise. My conclusion: the Body of Christ, the church, is the only organism (institution) spiritually equipped to engage the Satanic forces behind abortion. Therefore the Church must take lead in the efforts to end abortion.
Recently I read the following words given by Dr. D. James Kennedy at an Operation Save America event in Wichita Kansas in 2001. He said, "In spite of one of the most startling statements in all of God's Word - 'all those who hate me love death' (Proverbs 8:36) - we have watched our beloved nation, in a very short period of time, become infatuated with death. The time has come for those who value human life to oppose this gross moral evil with every resource available under law. I charge you to understand that the battle is not with any human organization, but with the principalities and powers of darkness. It is Satan, whom Jesus called a murderer from the beginning, who is behind this thrust to kill the innocent. If the Christian Church can be mobilized into an effective spiritual assault team to fight these forces, we can have every confidence that God will grant us victory.”
On January 20 of this year, two days before the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Rev. Flip Benham, head of Operation Save America released this statement. “Abortion will come to an end, when the Church of Jesus Christ makes up her mind it will come to an end – not a second sooner. The responsibility for ending abortion in America rests squarely upon the shoulders of the Church of Jesus Christ.” Pastors Kennedy and Benham are on the same page.
On January 21, I had the privilege to speak at the Rally for Life in front of the Federal Court building in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The rally was sponsored by Broward County Right to Life the day before the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. “It is foolish for us to believe that America will not face God’s judgment for the slaughter of the unborn,” I said, “I believe that we are under His judgment as we speak. Only a small remnant of the church are responding appropriately to the abortion holocaust. The church has largely remained silent, immobilized by its own self indulgence and fear of persecution and public opinion.”
I believe America will rise or fall depending on how it deals with the shedding of the innocent blood of 3,300 unborn babies killed by abortion each day. The end of slavery came at a high price, the lives of 600,000 of America’s fathers, uncles, sons, grandsons and brothers. Just as the inhumanity, suffering, bondage and even bloodshed of the slave cried out for justice, so does the blood of over 50 million unborn children. There is only one blood that can cover the sin of a nation that allows this bloodshed to continue. In my conclusion of the Rally for Life message, I said, “Ultimately, the gospel of Jesus Christ is the solution to America’s abortion crisis. Innocent blood has polluted the land and profaned the name of the Lord. But there is a greater blood shed at Mount Calvary that can transform the heart of a mother so she will choose life for her child, that can cleanse the guilty, forgive, heal and restore those involved in abortion. What America needs to hear is God’s truth about abortion wrapped in the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.” This is the message I am called to share with pastors and their congregations.
My mission in Church For Life is to serve the Church in its response to America’s abortion crisis as it: proclaims the message of the sanctity of human life; minsters healing and restoration to the post-abortive; and provides compassionate help to those at risk for abortion - three gospel driven steps the Church can take in the effort to end abortion. If it will, state sanctioned abortion will come to an end just as slavery did.
