What Peace on Earth?

Posted by DeVonna , 25 November 2016 · 2124 views

Listening to Christmas songs recently I was struck by their joyous message and the stark contrast between them and the condition of the world we live in today. Every day seems to bring news of more harsh realities of life on this little orb we call earth. Natural disasters, social turmoil, violence, loss, let’s face it, this world is a mess! How do we reconcile, then, this chaos with God’s message to the shepherds on the night of Jesus’s birth? Where is this, “Peace on Earth” the angels proclaim in the gospels?

The Jews of Jesus’s day misunderstood the prophecy message concerning Him. They expected Jesus to overthrow the unjust Roman rule and occupation and establish His everlasting kingdom on earth, at that time. What they didn’t understand or recognize is that Jesus came to save each one of us, individually. He came then, as He does now, to establish His domain in individual hearts and minds. We can be guilty of misunderstanding God’s message and intent for us today.
I’m not here to deny the reality of God’s future Kingdom on earth, I’m here to say we can experience the blessings of that time today! Peace is a choice, dear friends, that has at the heart of it, Faith. Reading and watching the news can impress on us the devil’s message that all is lost to mankind, but when we read our Bibles and engage with a community of believers through worship and service we reinforce the message that we as Christians can claim, Peace on Earth.

No matter the clamor and chaos of our world, we can choose peace. Psalm 34:14 tells us to seek peace and pursue it. Make Christ King of your heart and your life. Let His precepts of love, compassion and righteousness have full reign there! As the old Sunday School song says, “Brighten the corner, where you are”.

Where ever there is a warm, glowing heart of worship, wherever there’s a sparkling twinkle of faith, wherever a strengthening song of joy and praise is lifted, there is Peace on Earth. There in that heart, Jesus is King.

I’ll leave you with this familiar blessing from Numbers chapter 6, verses 24-26:
“The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn His face toward you and give you peace.”

Good Morning DeVonna,

That was a great post, I think you really hit the nail the head so to speak. I was reading The Beatitudes a few days ago (Matt 5:1-12) and came upon verse 9 where it says "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God." I immediately thought of peace in the individual sense just as you did in your post. I think people need to stop trying to change the whole world with just one act and start with themselves first. There is too much evil in the world for one person, unless that one person is Jesus Christ, to ever change it on their own. In my journey I have realized that even changing my heart, living at peace within myself, is an arduous task in which I need our Savior's help and guidance. We need to start with ourselves, "take the log out of our own eye" the bible tells us. If we start with our selves first, make our home peaceful, and start branching out into our communities, that is how we will find peace. Just my two cents on the post. Great post and have a great day.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I often wonder what people think when they read my posts. You are very right, we need to start with ourselves.
