Hi!  I attend a CMA church in Huntsville Alabama and we are revising our bylaws.  I was wondering whether we need to add a statement on declaring what marriage is as defined in the Bible.   Our gov board has debated pros and cons of doing this.  SSM is not recognized in Alabama currently but the way things are going, all it seems to take is one judge to change the law.

I was wondering if anyone else has considered or done this.  I especially would like to hear from churches who live in states where SSM is legal.

thanks

John Cyr

I would also recommend that you contact your district as there are likely some recommendations that they have.

John:

Thanks for your posting and for the care given to maintaining a Biblical standard. I do recommend that you address your question to Phil Hagar, the district superintendent in the Southern District. The C&MA does have policies relating to licensing, a denominational statement on marriage and a statement on Human Sexuality that addresses your concerns. I am sure that Rev, Hagar will be able to guide you through the revision of bylaws as necessary but there are clear statements made by the Alliance as a denomination that provide protection for pastors and churches.
