I think what you are talking about is the difference between being indwelt by the Spirit and being filled. All born-again believers are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, but not all are filled with the Spirit. The in-filling of the Spirit is something we have to ask for, sometimes repeatedly (because we leak). The Alliance has some great teaching on this subject by our VP of Church Ministries, John Soper. Click here to read about this topic in depth. In my daily walking in God's Holy Spirit; I find that on certain days I experience strong inner joy and strength. Exuberance and power is flowing within and through me on those days. Some days the flow comes at certain times during the day. Other days I don't experience much of anything at all. I know the Holy Spirit is always with me; but I long, hunger and thirst for that great flow of His Power. What is your experience in your daily walk? This is why the "church" exists I believe to encourage and lift each other up. So encourage and lift me please. I will hope to do that for you all too!

Thanks Julie; I'm Thinking I must leak a lot! I'm asking continuously, but not experiencing fullness continuously. Guess I'm just a leaky Lutheran!I think what you are talking about is the difference between being indwelt by the Spirit and being filled. And I must be a leaky Free Evangelical! I confess that I leak a lot, too. And when I do, I often forget to ask to be refilled. I want to say that I think it's wonderful that you hunger and thirst so much for the power of the Holy Spirit. Many believers don't even seek after that, which is very sad. I think there are a lot of Christians who don't even know that it's available to them. Thanks Julie; I'm Thinking I must leak a lot! Join the club, David--we're all leaky! The founder of the Alliance, A.B. Simpson, realized this too. One of his favorite metaphors for being filled with the Spirit was breathing. He spoke of breathing out the "old life" and sin and breathing in the new life of the Spirit, day by day.

Joel Where in Simpson's writings is that specifically; I'd be interested in hearing what brother Simpson has to say.Join the club, David--we're all leaky! The founder of the Alliance, A.B. "Breathing Out and Breathing In" uses the graphic imagery of the Holy Spirit as the very life-sustaining air we breathe, necessary for existence:
Jesus breathe Thy Spirit on me,
teach me how to breathe Thee in.
Help me pour into Thy bosom
all my life of self and sin.
I am breathing out my own life,
that I may be filled with Thine,
Letting go my strength and weakness,
breathing in Thy life divine.

David, it's funny that Marvin would respond before I got around to it. Actually, the hymn he references is the one that immediately came to mind when I read your question! You might check out Simpson's books, The Ministry of the Holy Spirit and Wholly Sanctified.
