Blessed Be the Name of the Lord

This Sunday morning during worship we were singing the verse from “Blessed Be the Name of the Lord” about He gives and takes away”. It was at that moment I realized, with some finality, that a man I consider a visionary, mentor and good friend was about to be” taken” away. Taken out of my orbit anyhow, and moved to another place. He had been “given” to me 14 years ago as a boss, he molded much of what and how I do my present job. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

The influencers in our life, those few who impact how we treat others, think about the future, view man’s relationship with man and other big sky priorities should be treated as a gift from God. The wisdom they impart to us starts with their relationship with Jesus. It is not their own wisdom. The love they show us, that changes us, is not their own, it is from God. Their ability to march to the beat of God’s draw on their life, and not man’s, which teaches us to put Him first, is from God. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

My emotions flooded over my logic just for a moment this morning and I wept, just for a moment. It was not long enough for anyone to notice but it apparently was necessary as part of the grieving process. He gives and takes away. He gave me a friend that gave me the gifts God had imparted to him. He is not being taken away, simply moved so that I can see those gifts clearer, now on my own. All good gifts come down from above. It is not the man but how that man receives and gives away what God has lent him. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

That song affected me, too. I first heard and sang it in our final weeks in Ecuador before returning to the U.S. for good. It was bittersweet to say goodbye to people, places and things what were dear to us, but I knew new and better things lay ahead for us. Now our daughter and son-in-law are going through the same thing in reverse. They are beginning the goodbyes of moving out of their house, selling or giving away most of their "stuff", re-homing their cat--all to answer God's call to reach people in Paris. Saying "yes" to growth, service and new good things the Lord has for us always involves saying no to sitting still and stagnation. I'm so thankful that as He moves us ahead, the connection with people who have meant so much to us is not broken (maybe just streched some by geographical distance) because we continue in the body of Christ.
