Relief For The Pain of Regret

Relief For The Pain of Regret

There's something uniquely painful about the sharp stab of regret. The knowledge that we've messed up and caused others to hurt can be intensely distressing. Whether we regret words said in anger or something bad that we've done, let’s face it, sometimes we mess up. Big time. What should we do in such times? As usual, the Bible points us in the right direction.

First of all, we need to admit we’re wrong, to ourselves and to God. After being confronted by Nathan, David was consumed with guilt over his sin of adultery with Bathsheba and the subsequent murder of her husband, Uriah. How David handled his guilt over this terrible sin, is recorded for our instruction and enlightenment in Psalm 51. David turned to God.

“Have mercy on me, O God,” David cries in Psalm 51:1 and in verse 3 he continues, “my sin is always before me.”

These are the words of a man wracked with guilt. His second course of action is to repent, and confess his sin. “Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight;” David continues in verse 4 of Psalm 51. David confessed that any sin we committ is in essence a sin against our righteous God.

Why confess our sins and failings to God? Because only He can remove the sting of regret and guilt and offer forgiveness for the many ways in which we fall short.
“according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.” David says in Psalm 51 verse one.

What an amazing thought! God can wash away ALL our iniquity, any sin, mess up or hurt we’ve caused can be forgiven by Him and we can receive peace in return.

“Cleanse me with hyssop and I will be clean, wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness...Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. ... Restore to me the joy of your salvation...” Psalm 51:7-12

There’s more of course to this idea of “making things right” than going to God to confess and forsake our sin and regret. There’s the process of making things right with the ones we’ve hurt, but that’s for another post. For now I want you to know that going to God is the starting point to healing.

It is the aim and tool of the Enemy of our souls to keep us locked in the dungeon of guilt, remorse and shame. Jesus came to free us from these terrible burdens. Let Him.

I’ll leave you with one more verse, 1John 3:19-20, “This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.”

Peace.

Hi! DeVonna

Thanks for the encouraging thoughts yea HE is omnipotent who can remove our regret and guilt and offer forgiveness. HE also said in Mathew 11:28 "Come unto me, all that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
