Loose Change

Loose Change Sometimes my two cents is more like loose change strewn about the counter top among a gaggle of other pennies, nickels, dimes, and even a Canadian coin or two. With all of the things going on in this world, at work, and even family matters where does one even begin with what to say? Right beside every two cents worth of my opinion is a shiny nickel. Next to that nickel a dime, and next to every one of those is a big round quarter which overshadows it. With so many opinions abound I have become desperate for one gleaming, tangible bit of firm truth to hold on to.

The scattering of opinions by every self-proclaimed expert reminds me of that young, disgruntled Lance Corporal in the Marines who takes it upon himself in being the "barracks lawyer" to an unsuspecting group of impressionable, yet naive newbies. Is that what we've become in this society; a collection of salty Lance Corporals whose very life mission is to dispense half-truths or to figure out loop holes with the intent on reforming a society to fit their agenda, ideals, or personal goals? A friend of mine commented on an article recently about a group of satanists and their plans to erect a monument of their leader in Oklahoma. His reaction was typical of many Americans I'm sure as he frustratingly asked aloud "What is this world coming to?" But should we really be surprised when we've become a place where just about anything goes and everyone has their say?

The truth is more and more people today don't believe in such a thing as absolute truth. We are free in ways we should never be and without an anchor of truth to keep us grounded we will continue to blow this way and that; wherever the winds of falsehood would take us. I recall a few years ago I had fallen hook, line, and sinker for a popular new age teaching that was picking up momentum at the time. Without having a solid foundation in my life of what was true I bought into the alluring promises of this passing trend which assured me if I would only just believe then I would receive my every heart's desire. But as I soared high on wings like Icarus I soon came crashing down quickly (and painfully) into the sea of reality as a result of flying too close to the sun.

After years of swallowing so many lies, today I am not ashamed to say I believe in one absolute Truth; more precisely "the way, the truth, and the life" (Jn 14:6). It took me a while to discover this, thirty-seven years to be exact, but when I did I sold all I had in order to buy the entire land surrounding it that this remarkable treasure was buried in. That's how real it is! With that said this world can keep the loose change of their opinions. It can even have my two cents if it wants, but as for me I would rather hold out long enough to receive a stone instead. One in which my Savior has inscribed for me a new name; one that belongs to me and me alone (Rev. 2:17).

Run to Win,
Den
