Who do you think Jesus is?

"Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime."
(John 4:5-6 NLT)

It's striking how human our Lord was. He was tired from the long walk. It was about noon.

Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, "Please give me a drink." He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.
The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, "You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?"
Jesus replied, "If you only knew the gift God has for you and who I am, you would ask me, and I would give you living water."
(John 4:7-10 NLT)
You can almost hear some sarcasm in the woman's voice. She would of course have been surprised that a Jewish rabbi would even talk to her, let alone drink from her cup.

But Jesus didn't respond to her sarcastic and bitter answer.

Instead, he made her curious with his phrase, "if you only knew".

Jesus didn't intend to win any arguments. He wanted to win her over instead!

This encounter our Lord had with the woman at the well is just the greatest example of witnessing to others, the Love and power of God to save.

When I was searching for direction in just how to witness to people about Jesus and the Good News, I thought of the Apostles at first. They preached the Gospel frequently in The Acts. But this event in our Lord's life was planned. Planned by God for the woman, for her entire village, and for me. Jesus is my perfect model in sharing the Gospel. Would that I had such boldness!

I learned a very long time ago, working in hospitals that when I won an argument with a patient or a patient's family member, I really lost. There may have been that momentary feeling of victory over another person. But, as a nurse, this didn't enhance healing, promote good communication or cause this person to feel good about the institution I worked for.

In this same vein, when discussing Jesus with another, it must be done in love. There can be no arguing. A simple question to start a conversation:

Who do you think Jesus is?
